It's true. Autumn may be the best time of year to visit the mountains of Rural Nevada. Here's our top-four list of things to do and see around Ely this time of year:
The picture above is of White Pine County's Success Loop. It starts just 17 miles north of Ely, winds through 30 miles of some of the best Autumn scenery in Nevada, and ends up about 8 miles south of Ely. The Las Vegas Review-Journal article raves about this hidden gem.
Every day in October except Tuesdays and Thursdays you can take a 90 minute train ride on The Nevada Northern Railway. Friday through Sunday they are pulled by one of the original steam engines that were delivered to the railroad over a century ago. It heads up Robinson Canyon toward the old Ruth Mining District and travels through two tunnels. You can freely move between the open air car and the coaches. Fun!
There is more great Autumn scenery and the mysterious subterranean passages of Lehman Caves within Great Basin National Park. If you have had trouble making reservations to go into Lehman Caves on one the National Park Service subterranean walking tours you will find it easier to find a spot this time of year.
The Haunted Ghost Train of Old Ely is a tradition that is not to be missed. It will depart on select weekend evenings in October. It usually sells out so make plans early. Who wants to be left at the station on a night like this?
You can plan on a great road trip this Autumn to someplace new and exciting. Be sure to bring cool weather clothing. Ely is a mile high in elevation with the train ride and side excursions going even higher. The average daytime high is 62° and the average overnight low is 28° in October. Ely is a full-service town with a variety of lodging and dining choices.
