Itinerary Highlights:
Durango, Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Million Dollar Highway, Silverton, Ouray

Best time to go: Summer, when the wildflowers are in bloom.  Fall, when the Aspen leaves turn yellow.

Details: The San Juan Skyway is one of the most scenic drives in America. It winds for 232 miles (373 km) through quant mining towns in the breathtaking San Juan Mountains. The scenic loop connects Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride and Cortez. Our itinerary starts in Durango and ends in Ouray.

Day One: Historic Downtown Durango and Art Galleries

Start with a walking tour of Downtown Durango and enjoy more than a dozen art galleries. From contemporary to western to Native American, Durango is quickly becoming a hub for fine art in the Southwest.  Downtown Durango is a Nationally Registered Historic District boasting historic hotels, award winning restaurants and boutique shopping. Enjoy dinner at one of our many local restaurants. After dinner don’t forget to stop by the Diamond Belle Saloon, revered as one of the most famous original ragtime piano bars in the Wild West.

Day Two: Train to Silverton, Colorado

Travel back in time via the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Silverton (Round trip: 6-hour). Relive the sites and sounds of yesteryear with a spectacular journey on board a historic, coal-fired, steam-powered train that has been transporting passengers since 1882. Upon return visit the Railroad Museum where you will learn about the history of railroading, transportation and mining. End your evening with a live show at the Durango Concert Hall or Henry Strater Theatre.

Day Three: Drive the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray

Depart for Ouray on the scenic San Juan Skyway. The Million Dollar Highway section of the Skyway between Silverton and Ouray is considered one of the most scenic and spectacular mountain drives in North America. (Drive time from Durango to Ouray: approx. 2 hours). In Ouray visit the Box Canyon Falls to take pictures of the gorgeous waterfalls (45 min).

When in Ouray you can take a break from driving and enjoy a dip in the hot springs while enjoying the amazing views that surround the town. You can either overnight in Ouray or continue your trip to Ridgway. The San Juan Skyway offers excellent views of the San Juan Mountains. Driving this All-American Road is a wonderful way to enjoy the fall colors when the aspens’ leaves turn their vibrant shades of gold.
