El Malpais has a wealth of caves, trails, and dramatic overlooks.  The NCA encompasses part of the McCartys lava flows, the most recent volcanic eruption in New Mexico, dating to 3,800 (± 1,200 years.)  The NCA was established at the same time as the El Malpais National Monument.  Camping and hiking are allowed, but if you hike through the lava flows, wear shoes with sturdy soles!
